“Maybe we were meant to be lonely,” Jinki says. It's almost soft enough to disappear in the space between them, but he knows she has heard him by the sharp intake of her breath.
“Maybe we don't have to be all alone,” Sunyoung answers him. She's smiling and he has to close his eyes. It isn't a plea when she says, “Don't go.” When she reaches out, takes his hands into hers and removing the gloves he wears, until the leather lies crumpled in between her fingers and she holds on tight. Jinki's chest feels tight.
“I know,” he says and it doesn't really make sense and it's more like he is breathing it into her hair — if she had been standing that close. Sunyoung is still bright as she smiles up at him though, and if there are tears in her eyes he wilfully ignores their existence. His lips are trembling; hers are quivering and the kiss is all too chaste. His hands finds hers, fingertips touching and he takes his gloves from her.
“Don't go,” she says. It's still not a plea. She doesn't beg, except that she does. Her eyes are worried.
He has to go, her words won't change a thing. Though, they do. They matter and shows him things he didn't quite dare to dream of before. She'll stand there and she'll wait, he knows, because that is how Sunyoung is. He promises her letters as often as he can, and Sunyoung laughs. Promises to write him back. It isn't much but it is enough.
